The jobs semiconductor plants need most — and how to get one

Clayton Huber says the state’s semiconductor workforce is growing fast — but not fast enough.

(KBTX-TV) Texas remains No. 1 in semiconductor chip manufacturing, and as SpaceX continues clearing land for its Terafab facility, new jobs are coming with it. So how can people best prepare to land one of those jobs?

Clayton Huber, director of workforce development at the Texas A&M Semiconductor Institute, says fabs like Terafab typically split new job creation roughly evenly between two types of roles.

“When we look at new job creation for a fab, we’re looking at around 50-50 for technicians and engineers, and so that’s a really big need and a really big demand,” Huber said.
